PROTECTING ENDANGERED CRAFTS

REVERSE SIGN PAINTING & GILDING
Michelle received funding from 'Heritage Crafts' to learn the techniques of :
Reverse Glass Sign Painting & Brilliant Cutting.
She studied under David Smith, a world renowned decorative glass artist based in Devon. These decorative crafts are endangered and Michelle incorporates what she has learnt in conservation/restoration work and in new commissions.

Traditional stained glass is also an endangered craft.
Michelle & Nathan work to bring these various crafts together.

LEADED LIGHTS & STAINED GLASS

House Name Transom Design 2024
The relationship between leaded lights and reverse glass painting can be seen in many Victorian and Edwardian houses where designers introduced glass reverse painting and gilding into domestic architecture.

House Numbers and House Names are often designed using these techniques combined.

At Stonecroft we conserve old reverse painting and gilding and also introduce new but traditional signage in keeping with the architecture.

Design
Gold. Silver. Variegated leaf.

Michelle & Nathan are now makers of glass signage
for houses and commercial buildings. These can be framed and hung or directly incorporated into the architectural setting of a building.`They use traditional techniques with old or contemporary typography and they draw from a rich variety of lexicons.
A single word/words presented on glass using a beautiful decorative font can become
an object of beauty,
something commemorative
or something humorous.
